#59 - The Hero

There is always a lesson to learn when you watch “The Rifleman.” There is no better teacher for Mark than his father, Lucas McCain. Lucas teaches Mark from “The Bible” and from experience. Sometimes the lessons are hard ones and at times rather easy ones. They are still lessons learned! Let’s discuss the lessons learned in each episode. “Every lesson you learn makes you a better partner.” “Just remember the lessons!”

Interestingly, Colley is one of the few young men in town who has a steady girlfriend.

How awkward do you think the dinner with Colley was for Lucas that night? What do you think the two talked about?

Of course, we don't know what Colley was like before the shooting of the domino kid, but Colley struck me as rather peevish. If there was discussion among the citizens of having Colley charged with a crime-and i am sure there was- Colley was not doing himself any favors by being so anxious to collect the reward.

Interestingly, Colley calls Lucas mr. McCain and Micah Marshall. Lucas is only about 9 years older than Colley. Younger men than Colley call Lucas by his first name. Colley works at the livery stable and Lucas owns a ranch, but pretty much everyone is on the same social footing.

When Lucas orders Mark to go bed, the first time he says it, his tone is really harsh . The second time Lucas tells Mark to go to bed Lucas's time is gentler as if he is trying to shoot Mark out of the way before Mark can say anything else and cause any more damage.

The next morning when Mark brings in the firewood, I think he is trying to kiss up to Lucas because he knows he is in big trouble. He ruins it by his petulant tone of voice.

When Colley kills the domino kid in self-defense, he is treated with scorn by Mark and most others in town. When Mark accidentally kills Charlie, as far as we know, there are no repercussions from the others in north fork.
