Here's one and it just hit Encore Westerns recently - "The Halliday Brand". Joseph Cotten and Ward Bond are the only cast members in it whose names ring a bell. I'm not a huge fan of either of them to begin with but in this movie I don't like them at all. This movie starts with weird opening titles and music and progresses into a story about people who just don't appeal to me at ALL! The sick old father, the bleak daughter, the middle-aged son, and a storyline that drags along like a headache.

Maybe someone else likes this one. Maybe there are some I like that other's don't. It makes the world go round I guess. "The Halliday Brand" looks like someone's crash project to use up a slow script and a small amount of capital left in that year's budget. 1/2 star!

Joseph Lewis, was a well-known B picture director (lots of film noir), who worked on several westerns during his career.  His films had been mostly forgotten until the 1980s when his body of work had a resurrange, thanks to the support of Peter Bogdanovich.

Released in 1957, this film contained subject matter that must have been somewhat controversial for the era.  The fact that Lewis took on such touchy issues as miscegenation and racial prejudice is extremely interesting to me.

Joseph Cotten and Viveca Linfors, I thought, were both miscast.  While fine actors, their more sophisticted personnas are not totally believable in a western setting.  I did think that Cotten and Ward Bond (whom I do like) were very engaging in their scenes together.

I was trying to remember where I'd seen Joseph Cotten recently and it came to me it was in a Christmas movie called 'Holiday Affair' with Robert Mitchum. (Cotten was engaged to a young widow with a son... she crosses paths with Mitchum and it keeps happening until it's obvious Mitchum is the right man for her. Cotten played a very good sport of a rejected fiancé though.)

Cotten is a good actor - I just never was sold on him in this movie. Also, I think a movie about a father and a son should have a son who's younger than pushing middle-age already. It made the whole movie seem 'old'. I'm surprised they weren't wearing velcro fasteners on their boots.

PJH:1777 wrote:Rooster, I believe you are thinking of Wendall Corey in Holiday Affair with Janet Leigh and Jim Mitchum rather than Joseph Cotten.  The only reason I know this is because Holiday Affair is one of my top five Christmas movies.

I completely agree with you about Joseph Cotten in Halliday Brand---too old for the role and not believable.  I think my favorite movies with him are Citizen Kane and The Farmer's Daughter with Loretta Young.
