Mark's Lines

Mark McCain was as important to the show as the Rifleman himself. Let's talk about his sweet nature and sensitivity. Always learning from Lucas, sometimes the hard way, fear of losing his only parent, times he got into trouble, their respect for each other, and how he was portrayed as a motherless kid but had the insight and determination of a disciplined adult.

“Well, he wouldn’t come here, would he?”

"It's my Pa's rifle, mister, and he won't sell it, so you just try and take it!"

“Pa, they’ll kill you!  You come with me."

"You can't do it alone!  And even if you do send me off, I'll come right back and jump one of them with a rock."

“What’s this all about, Pa?”

When did Mark say these lines?

“Yes sir.  There was a calf caught in some bushes and after I let it loose, I stumbled into the grave.”

“What you kill them with?”

"Anybody with guns like this…I’d think they’d show ‘em around!”

“My note!  You tore it up!”

Name the episode from Mark's lines.

“You know what you’ve always told me about lying?”

“Alone?”

“No!  No, I can’t leave ya!”

“Where could he be?”

loved the episode  The Boarding House

"You didn't clean your plate, lady,” Mark so rudely stated.

Agnes didn’t much appreciate it, but stated, "After we are better acquainted you may call me Miss Agnes.”

“If you pulled a trick like that out at our ranch, it’d be Miss Mud!” Mark went on to declare.  I was horrified! I couldn’t believe this boy! He felt my glare, so after giving me a quick apologetic look, he stated, "No harm meant Miss Agnes Hamilton, only my Pa says, lettin' good food go to waste is a criminal, what with starvin' people all over we got no time to be finicky."

"Pa had to take a belt to my britches before I understood. Course if you was to finish your dinner I don't think he'd do anything. With you being a female, kinda old and all."

and then of course Wyoming Story part 2

He's not coming back," Mark answered sadly.

"Well...it's been most of two months. He hasn't written - no word. Didn't wanna be a dirt farmer. There are no cattle around here.”

"Lucas will be back - you've gotta believe that,” Milly promised him. “You've gotta have faith.”

"I tried!" Mark cried.

"I figured on maybe movin' back in,” Mark announced then.
. "Pa's not here anymore!" He walked over to the plaque I made and stood there looking at it. With tearful emotion he read it out loud. "This house rebuilt by Lucas McCain and his son Mark. Guess that makes it half mine and since Pa doesn't see it fit to live in anymore.....why.....why.....I guess that makes it all mine now." Mark leaned his head against the post and began crying.

"Course I'd rather be a cattle rancher, but you can't do that without any cattle. And...and besides...I don't see anything wrong with being a dirt farmer. You eat good...and...and beans...are always good for the market. I like beans...and I was figurin' on some corn too. And who knows...I heard that people are startin' wheat around here." Mark was to emotional to speak anymore.

"I tried to think he'd come back," said Mark. "But how much faith is a person suppose to have? I lost everything when he did, didn't I? I even lost him. What am I suppose to...suppose to...su…"

Mark stopped. He slowly lifted his head. "Pa?"

The sudden change puzzled Milly. "Mark, what is it?"

"Pa?" Mark slowly lifted his head some more as he spoke.

"What's a matter boy?" Micah asked then.

Mark turned his head and looked up the hill. "Pa...Pa!" He suddenly turned and looked up the hill.

Great acting Johnny!
