Set during the Great Depression, Clint Eastwood plays a would-be western singer named Red Stoval suffering from tuberculosis who is finally given an opportunity to make it big at the Grand Ole Opry. He is accompanied by his young nephew (played by Eastwood's son Kyle) to Nashville, Tennessee where he is suppose to record a song.

After a series of adventures,  the boy and Uncle Red finally arrive at Nashville, only to have the tuberculosis reach a critical stage in the middle of the recording session, where Red's lines are filled in by a side guitarist (played by Marty Robbins who actually finishes the song). Red finally succumbs while his nephew vows to tell the story of his uncle.

This is the actual clip from the movie of the song---you do have to get through a few seconds of German  dubbed dialog to hear the song--but it's in English.

Clint Eastwood also appeared in the 1969 musical, Paint Your Wagon (a western that had been a huge hit on broadway).  The movie received negative reviews (I agree), but the idea of Clint and co-star Lee Marvin singing was worth the price of admission.
