A Short Biography of Robert Culp

Let's talk about these three great stars of "The Rifleman." They certainly made the show what it was & is today. I thought they deserved their own section.

A Short Biography on Robert Culp

On August 16, 1930, the world was blessed by the birth of Robert Martin Culp.  An only child, Culp filled his lonely life by acting in local theatre productions and delving in the world of art.  During high school, he earned extra money drawing comics, but he eventually gave all that up for acting.

After graduating from high school, Culp went the college and skipped around to various colleges, but never really earned a degree in anything.  He moved from California and then to New York before beginning his acting career.  Culp began his television career in 1953 at the age of 23 in the television show “You Are There.”

Robert had four major television roles during his lifetime.  The first major role he played was Trackdown.  In that show, he played a Texas Ranger named Hoby Gilman.  The show lasted two seasons (1957-1959).  Trackdown is featured on this Website.

In 1965, Robert co-starred with Bill Cosby in I Spy from 1965 to 1968.  Culp and Cosby remained good friends until his death.  In 1981, Culp played Bill Maxwell in “The Greatest American Hero.  (Introduction:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBKqwdxUH8U).  Finally, in 1996, Culp played Warren in Everybody Loves Raymond until 2004.

Besides these four major roles, Culp had many other wonderful and talented roles throughout his career:

Personal Life

Robert Culp married for the first time on September 23, 1951 to Elayne Caroll.  They eventually divorced.  On May 29, 1957, Culp married his second wife, Nancy Asch.  They had four children together:  Joseph (1963), Joshua (1958), Jason (1961), and Rachel.  Robert and Nancy divorced in September 1966.

On December 9, 1967, Robert married his third wife, France Nuyen.  They divorced almost three years later.  Then on Christmas day of 1971, Robert married fourth wife, Sheila Sullivan.  They divorced ten years later. Then on Decembr 31, 1981, Robert married his last wife, Candance Faulkner.  They remained married until his death 28 years later.  They had one child together,  Samantha (1982).  He also had five grandchildren at the time of his death.

Though some report his death as a heart attack, IMDB states that he was found unconscious by a hiker on a hiking trail in Hollywood Hills.  It is suspected he had a heart attack, but it’s also believed that his actual cause of death was due to head injuries he sustained when he fell.

Wikipedia on Culp’s death:
“The 79-year-old Culp often went hiking at Runyon Canyon, a park near his Hollywood Hills apartment. On the morning of March 24, 2010, Culp left the apartment to go for a walk. A jogger found him lying on the sidewalk near the lower entrance of Runyon Canyon. Police and paramedics were summoned, but were unable to revive him. Culp was pronounced dead at a little after 11:00 a.m. at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. Although initial police reports indicated that Culp died from striking his head when he fell, it was later determined that he collapsed and died due to a massive heart attack. The only injury from the fall was a minor cut on his head. On April 10, 2010, a private memorial service was held at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles with Culp's family, friends and fans attending. At the time of his death Culp had just completed filming a supporting role in The Assignment. He was working on several screenplays. One of those screenplays, an adaptation of Terry and the Pirates, had already received financing and was scheduled to begin shooting later this year in Hong Kong with Culp directing. Terry and the Pirates was Culp's favorite comic strip as a child and it was his lifelong dream to make a film based on it.[2][3][6]” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Culp)
