What a character!

Post by cowgirl » Mon Feb 05, 2018 9:33 am

Let's talk about some of the character actors that appeared on The Rifleman.

There were so many memorable actors that appeared on the show.

I'm gonna start out with Jack Elam.

He attended Santa Monica Junior College in California and subsequently became an accountant and, at one time, manager of the Bel Air Hotel. Elam got his first movie job by trading his accounting services for a role. In short time he became one of the most memorable supporting players in Hollywood, thanks not only to his near-demented screen persona but also to an out-of-kilter left eye, sightless from a childhood fight.

I found this interview where he was on Letterman. He talks about the role he passed up and counting the lines in the script to whether or not he would consider it. It's a neat interview!

Yes - Yes - Jack Elam was one of my favorite characters on The Rifleman too.
I remember asking my Dad the first time I saw Jack: "What's wrong with that man's eye?"

Jeff Connors said he was scared of Jack when he first saw him.
I guess as kids - we had a different reaction to Jack.

Terrific interview with David Letterman! I laughed out loud.
I wish he had mentioned his characters on The Rifleman.

OK - My favorite character on The Rifleman was Richard Anderson.
He had good chemistry with Chuck and he was handsome. :icon_biggrin:

RIchard Anderson was handsome. He is listed as one of Chucks lifelong friends.

also back then they did not know that Michael Landon, Adam West, Martin Landeau would become famous.

Peter Whitney - Denver Pyle -John Milford and Royal Dano were not only character actors on The Rifleman. I've seen them on several episodes of "GunSmoke" - "Wagon Train" - "Big Valley" & "Bonanza".

I thought nothing would surprise me until I saw Dick Clark on an episode of "Branded".
It seems like every star in Hollywood was in a western. :msn-oh:

Surprise - Surprise - Surprise!

Dick Clark?? I have not seen that episode yet! wow

thats like when I saw David Hartman on the Virginian (he did 7 episodes playing the same character.) He is also 6' 5" tall, educated at Duke University. I could not imagine him as a cowboy but actually he was very good. I could only see him as the host of Good Morning America

Chris Alcaide and Claude Akins are some of my many favorite actors.

Both play great bad dudes!

They bother also appeared on Branded. I wouldn't be afraid to bet that Chuck requested them.

I bet you are right Cowgirl. I think Claude Akins was also listed as one of Chucks lifetime friends
The movie and terrific fight scene between them in Ride Beyond Vengeance seems to be blocked now on youtube. it was fantastic. I think I read they did the scenes without stunt doubles.
