Child's restaurant: I recently read these shallow graves by Jennifer Donnelly. The story takes place in late 1890's new York and mentions child's restaurant. Child's restaurant was one of the first cafeterias and probably one of the first cafeteria chains. It was started in 1889.

According to Judith Flanders' Christmas : a biography, a reduced parcel delivery service-sounds like u.p.s. to me- opened in Britain in 1883. Also in 1883, Montgomery ward introduced the 10,000 item catalogue in the u.s.

You're right Dana. both those cases...Pop Simmons and Sara sounds like a case for North Forks Judge Judy!

Sorry, wrong column! In 1881, French painter Pierre-auguste Renoir painted luncheon of a Sunday boating party. I am not adept at posting pictures, but you guys will know the painting if you see it.

Henry James' classic book, the portrait of a lady, was first published in 1881. The book is about expatriate Americans in Europe. It is my current read.
