In 1878, western union telegraph installed a telephone in the second national bank in Santa fe. Telegraph wires connected the phone to the bank president's phone.

Wild west, Mark would have called everyone if Lucas Would have let him!

In 1879, las Vegas, new Mexico businessman Carlos Blanchard installed two telephones-one in his home and one in his place of business.

ImageToo bad they didn't have cell phones too, instead of going out looking for each other they could just call and if no answer.....

I just thought of this: Mark was always interested in new things and even predicted the future-perhaps Mark went to work for the telephone company when it arrived in North fork.

That's a possibility!

What were the first words ever spoken on the telephone? They were spoken by Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, when he made the first call on March 10, 1876, to his assistant, Thomas Watson: "Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you."

I wonder what Mark's first words would be and to who?

On January 12, 1881, telephone lines between mesila, new Mexico and las cruces, new Mexico were installed. Legend has it a telephone concert, which was all the rage back then was played.

In January 1881, the telephone was used between two military posts to report the recovery of some stolen livestock.
