Cut to the quick

From both the pitchman and the wizard of oz: the expression "cut to the quick" means to really, really hurt someone's feelings. The quick in the skin underneath the fingernails. Anyone who has ever torn a nail there-and who hasn't?-know how much it hurts! Ouch! Makes me cringe just thinking about it!
