Unusual Episode Phrases

Post by wildwest » Wed Aug 22, 2018 4:12 pm

I learn SO much around the ranch. The writers were very good about using unusual phrases and phrases true to the Western time frame. Lets list some of these we have heard on RIfleman

Whips and Jingles...recently posted by Deneen....The Marshall

Companion to owls.....The Marshall......I’m companion to owls and brother of the dragons. this is actually from the bible.....Job 30:29 KJV: I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls. JOB was one of Sam Peckinpahs favorite books of the Bible. I wonder if this is why it could have been used here as JOB was also used in Home Ranch

Hello the house.....recently posted by Dana....The Long Goodbye and also The Woman
Riding Shotgun......recently posted by Dana.....Spiked Rifle
Box canyon....maybe not unusual but not heard unless you live in an area that may have them....The Vision
Big Galoot....Gun Shy
Shivaree......Shivaree....you don't hear this anymore
Money, marbles and chalk....Home Ranch and Horse Traders
Knock on wood.....we still use this one....I take this Woman
Every man to his own snakes....Brother in Law
Hard headed as a pine board knot....The Apprentice
Whats this world coming to?....we still use this one....The Indian
Humdnger of a fight...we still use this one....The Wrong Man
Mark said..."go to meeting shirt"....don't hear this now.....A Matter of Faith
Turn loose your dogs.....The money Gun

Head em up and move em out...Tension....I thought this was neat we always heard that on Rawhide too. I guess it was a term used mostly for moving cattle

Like a new penny....The Visitor.....Princeton's WordNet .. bright as a new penny.. (metaphor) shining brightly
Charm the bark off a tree....Micah says in Marks Rifle... (talk the bark off a tree... Talk so much as to exhaust the listener)

now I am pooped and my brain is tired

Thank you for collecting The expressions, wildwest!

From the brother-in-law: eat crow- to eat crow means to admit one is really, really, really in the wrong. I cannot speak from personal experience, but crow meat is supposed to be the foulest tasting stuff ever-even worse than liver! Yuck!

Liver and Onions - Yum!

Yes - She actually ate a real crow.

Wendy made a bet that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West wouldn't be married longer than 72 days.

She had a gourmet chef cook the crow in a gumbo.
They showed a raw crow and the chef said there are recipes for cooking crow. :o

What some people won't do for ratings.
