Someone didn’t do their research...

I thought it would be neat to have a place to discuss "The Rifleman" episodes. If there is an episode you wish to discuss in length, please feel free to post it here.

In 1843, Nancy Johnson of new jersey invented and patented the hand-held crank ice cream machine. In 1885, Agnes Mitchell of great Britain invented and patented an ice cream maker that froze ice cream in 5 minutes.

I was super excited, because I thought the writers actually got something right... but unfortunately, the timing was flawed.

At the beginning of season 4, Lucas says Mark is 13. So if Mark was 10 when they settled in North Fork, 3 years have passed since they settled in 1881, making it 1884.

In episode 10 of season 4, Mark gets super excited because Mark Twain arrives in North Fork. Our Mark starts asking about Huckleberry Finn. Our problem is that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn wasn’t released in the U.S. until February of 1885. Well then I thought, maybe in those eight episodes, they made it to the new year.

...But in episode 21 of season 4, Tip Corey is buried and his cross says, “Died 1884.”

...Maybe Mark got a U.K. version? He says it takes a long time for the chapters to come from Boston, so maybe he’s talking Boston, England?
Nope... the book wasn’t released in the U.K. until December 1884. Considering how slow the mail was back then, they couldn’t have even gotten the first chapter from Boston, MA by the end of the month, so that doesn’t work, either. (Because unless they could time travel, Tip Corey still had to die in 1884 eleven episodes later.)

Alas... the writers were so close, yet so far...

Morgan, I'm going to add this to the Bloopers page under miscellaneous. I know others will find this interesting also. :grinning-cowboy:
